    1. Beautiful setting, interesting story, great writing, butDavid s restaurant business partner and partner, gambles away every assets and David must start over He s offered a job in Puerta Vallarta as a chef for a movie production, and he speaks Spanish, so he jumps at the opportunity He has the time, and he can earn good money while he awaits the bankruptcy court hearing John, mysterious and handsome sees David and wordlessly they go off to a secluded beach for sex It s a slow burn as they each se [...]

    2. 3.5 starsI think this story has a beautiful sense of place I enjoy the description of Puerto Vallarta and the retreat house at Layapa It adds nuance to the story. On the other hand, I don t know, I feel like there s a bit too much is going on for both the MCs David Schwartz, the main narrator, is an ex alcoholic he has been sober for 10 years, though whose first true love died in an accident and his latest lover practically sent David to bankruptcy While his love interest, John Giovanni, an ex pr [...]

    3. 2,5 I think I liked the previous books better I can t connected with David and John.Or this book was too biblical for me The talk about sin and all, tired me off Though I don t mind to read about David and Jonathan in a future And the question about the endingwhat s John said when he put the ring on David s finger Since he was a priest, was that a marriage

    4. 4.5 stars There s a line in the AA literature that talks about being spiritually bankrupt I ve had two serious relationships in my life the first was Antonio His death left me spiritually bankrupt recently, the other, Rick, left me financially bankrupt, and while it sucks big time, it s a much better way to go DavidDavid, a recovering alcoholic, has had his share of bad luck and bad choices Years ago, living in Mexico, he lost his first love in a tragic accident and then lost himself in a bottl [...]

    5. Another book I was hesitant to start reading, because of the alcoholic past of the MC Although I love the writing by this author, it still took me some time and then choosing it for my July challenge till I finally came around reading it And I should have had faith in Ms Bentham to write a book that was a pleasure reading from beginning to end Slowly flowing along, no big drama, but one guy pulling himself together after loosing everything and then meeting someone, who also had lived through som [...]

    6. Why I read it I received a review copy from the author. What it s about from Life s a gamble and lately David Schwartz s partner has been losing so much that David must close their restaurant, the hippest little place in Portland He sells everything and moves back home, but at thirty five, he s not eager to sleep alone in his childhood bedroom or to be supported by his father for the second time in his adult life.David s had enough He needs to start over, maybe with someone like the elusive man h [...]

    7. 3.5 starsThis review was originally written for MM Good Book Reviews and can also be found there This was another good one by Dev Betham following the life of David who hasn t had it easy She combined romantic with mysteries but she left her characters just as imperfect and complicated as she wanted them to be without falling into the temptation of turning it too sweet.David lost his restaurant when his business and personal partner succumbed to his gambling addiction yet again and is forced to [...]

    8. This is a new author for me, and one I will definitely pick up again as I really liked the writing style and descriptions used The story starts with David, losing the boutique restaurant he owns and has built up when his partner gambles away all their money Faced with bankruptcy he moves initially in with his father but then a friend offers him a position working in a catering truck for a film shoot in Mexico Before he even leaves he dreams of someone he calls his merman walking out of the sea W [...]

    9. I read all four of these Tarnished Souls books in rapid succession after getting the first, Learning from Isaac as a BookBub featured freebie and by the way, it is still free as of 1 22 16 and is really good gp product B00J They are really written beautifully Each can be read as a stand alone but there are characters that cross over and it is fun to see them appear in each others books Loved these four books this one the MOST it had God and AA in it, two of my faves but they were all great , an [...]

    10. This was a well written book but I just didn t feel these guys And I don t know why For some reason I found their initial interactions kinda creepy and I think that stayed with me for some reason It had all the elements that I love it a book but just didn t really move me Except the beginning when his world was falling apart That did get to me The smexing was okay, nothing overly hot or sexy but nice Worth reading though and a nice story.

    11. Beautiful book Absolutely loved it Great slow unfolding story, which just captures your attention right away and doesn t let go till the end David s great and John s a mistery at the beginning, but later on we ve got to know and sympathize with him too I loved the writing, so poetic

    12. 2.5 stars rounded up because even though I ended up skimming whole pages of boring little details and not enough interactions between the characters, I did like David.

    13. Reviewed for Confessions from RomaholicsReview at Confessions from RomaholicsA connection held by an invisible thread seeming to pull two lost souls together Though life doesn t always go down the path you start out on and you will most likely stumble a few times, you can always get back up, dust yourself off and start over Which is precisely what David is going to have to do after his partner in both life and business decides to gamble away all their earnings in one night. Now jobless, newly sin [...]

    14. Reviewed on Hearts on Fire3.75 StarsI loved the writing and the pace and the lack of excessive melodrama even while dealing with dramatic life changing issues but did find one character clearly developed than the other. When we first meet David Schwartz he s in the midst of a life crisis His business and personal partner Rick has gambled away all David s life s savings, costing him his dream of being a chef and owning his own restaurant and effectively opening his eyes to the fact that the toxic [...]

    15. A gay Jewish alcoholic chef walks into a bard sees John He s mesmerized by the sight of the man of his dreams staring right back at him Before he realized it was happening, he was moving toward John, as if propelled forward by a mysterious force.A gay ex priest turned yoga instructor walks into a bard sees David He is startled by the heat and familiarity he sees in David s gaze He succombs to the sudden, inexplicable need to be near this man and when he is close enough, he reaches out to touch h [...]

    16. A Mrs Condit Recommended Book Amazing Fantastic One of the best books of 2012 Dev Bentham s SACRED HEARTS raises the bar for holiday stories and is the best of her Tarnished Souls series, already all winners for me SACRED HEARTS can be read as a stand alone, independent of the other books in the series as each book is a story centered on different Jewish holidays. The MCs are outstandingly rendered David, the faithful Jewish man who still lights his Hannukah candles in the window of his hotel roo [...]

    17. She s a recent auto buy author for me I adored Moving in Rhythm that one will never leave my keeper shelf ever What I really like about this current series is that she s taken a cultural tradition I ve never seen much or any in romances Jewish holidays and she crafts such beautifully nuanced heroes around the holiday This is the Hanukkah book, but it s unlike most holiday romances in that the tone is very somber and dark for the first half of the book And so much angst amid the gorgeous Mexican [...]

    18. Sacred Hearts is the third book in the Tarnished Souls series and it focuses on Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights This was truly a pleasure to read I was captivated by the storyline it just flowed and kept my interest until the last page I really enjoyed David and John, the two main characters, they couldn t be perfect for one another. The book is set in a gay friendly Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and the setting is so vividly imagined that it almost becomes like another character. The highlight of th [...]

    19. 3.5 stars but bumped up for its original take on its themes. This book kept my interest each time I had time to read than a page Unfortunately my time to read was a little disjointed I really liked the way the author dealt with alcholism without taking us through all the prior pain to get our MC David to the clean AA point The bankruptcy, lost love s, catering, Mexico and religion all take a firm centre stage, and I enjoyed that change of scenery The romance really only kicks in the last quarte [...]

    20. I started this story a little annoyed at David for putting his trust in Rick, when Rick had proven over and over again that he was not trustworthy But, seriously, most of us have done something stupid in the name of love at some point in our lives I did admire David s ability to pick himself up and keep going John is an interesting character Here is a man who has struggled with how being gay fits into his relationship with God It sure did not fit into the priesthood, but he is working hard at bu [...]

    21. The best thing about these books is that they are relatively short and easy to get through This book like the last one was another disappointment For some reason I didn t like John very much I didn t like how evasive he was He acted like a teenager at times than a grown man I did like that he couldn t dance and had no rhythm There really wasn t much of a plot here I kept skimming dialogue to get to the meat of the story And the story was fairly predictable The best part of this story was David s [...]

    22. A Recommended Read Dev Bentham brings the characters and setting vibrantly to life in this emotionally complex and compelling novel Sacred Hearts is full of unexpected twists and turns and a romance that is so sweet it will take your breath away To read my review in its entirety, please click HERE.

    23. I don t know what it is about the book, but I just couldn t connect with the characters, especially John He seems like an enigma even up to the end And David, while I admire how he picks up the pieces of his life and makes a turn around, just frustrated me at times.

    24. The 3rd book in a series full of perfectly imperfect characters Very entertaining Their stories are all very different but slightly intertwined You do not have to read them together but I recommend it as they do refer to the other characters enough that it makes them much interesting.

    25. While I started off somewhat disappointed with how depressing this book started off, by the end I loved it

    26. Sacred Hearts is the best book of the series Or maybe that s just my priest kink rearing its ugly head.
