    1. Beautifully written with complex and ingenious plot I really enjoy the way Punshon describes his characters Difficult to say without spoiling I am pleased that I decided to read the Bobby Owen series in chronological order as I think doing so adds to the enjoyment Fortunately Kindle have the whole series numbered so it is not difficult to do Great value too at under a quid each Highly recommended.

    2. An example of Punshon in excellent form although when is he otherwise Interesting cast of eccentrics with the plot centred round a library of rare books and partly based on the case of the famous forger T J Wise Introduction and afternote both very good Usual convolutions and mysteries, some progress in Bobby and Olive s relationship and county police of various ranks.I did not find it too difficult to work out the murderer and some of the whys and wherefores but as always there were too many c [...]

    3. Amazing I couldn t even guess at the direction of investigation For a change, there was incredible deduction going on Though claimed to follow real life police investigation, I have not found that in any of punshon s previous books But this one was right on the spot

    4. Another one I heard about on the Classic Mysteries podcast And it was a pretty good story I hadn t read the rest of the series but didn t feel like I missed much Detective Sergeant Bobby Owen is visiting his fiancee s family friend, Miss Kayne Her father had assembled one of the finest libraries in England and the care and keeping of it was left to her in her lifetime and then to go to her nephew if she had no male offspring But this is a strange place The library is dark, Miss Kayne claims to h [...]

    5. The Miss Kayne mentioned in the blurb is a fat old woman, and I lost count of the number of times our POV, Bobby, described her grossness in a kind of mesmerised wonder. One of the odder mysteries in the series, as a whole.
